Sept. 15 was chosen as the beginning of Hispanic Heritage month because it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. This is followed by Mexico’s and Chile’s independence days on Sept. 16 and 18. Cleveland has the second largest Hispanic population in the state, behind Columbus with 70,179 people, about 7.7% of the city’s population.
