Other than the Cleveland National Air Show, most Clevelanders probably don’t know who uses Burke -- or why. That may change this year, as the city prepares to take another look at the future of the facility, which occupies 450 acres on the Lake Erie shore.

The Plain DealerCLEVELAND, Ohio – Nearly a third of all non-training flights at Cleveland’s Burke Lakefront Airport involve medical transportation, whether organs for transplant, air ambulance services or patients flying in for treatment.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, campaigning for office last fall, promised “an honest conversation about the future of Burke.” That conversation is expected to get under way soon, starting with a new study that will consider the possibility of closing Burke. * Lawyers, bankers and business executives use the airport for its easy access to downtown, often flying rented charter flights in and out of Cleveland.
Burke typically operates at a loss, subsidized by the much larger Cleveland Hopkins. This year’s deficit is projected to be about $640,000, according to the city. Aitheras, based at Burke, offers both private charters and medical transportation from Cleveland and three cities in the Southeast. The company owns nine jets and employs about 50 people, including pilots, maintenance workers, dispatch and others.
Dell also questioned how much building could occur on a closed Burke. “If you walked out behind my office and started to dig, you’d come to trash,” she said, joking that Jimmy Hoffa might be buried on airport property. “I don’t know what’s under here and I don’t know if you want to disturb that,” she said.Cleveland Plain Dealer
