The Netflix adaptation of a classic war novel has a powerful and poignant resonance in 2023
, stepped up for a seventh time to the Bafta podium on an evening when the German-language film had swept the board, he took a moment to describe the importance of the film, an adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel of the same name. “It tells the story of young men who, poisoned by right-wing political nationalist propaganda, go to war thinking it’s an adventure,” he said. “And war is anything but an adventure.
That the film, a harrowing depiction of the horrors of war, seemingly came out of the leftfield to scoop seven awards of the 14 it was nominated for might have come as a shock for the audience watching at home. After all, the buzz around films likehad been deafening for months, with all films well rewarded with gongs at last month’s Golden Globes.
The film - directed by Edward Berger - warrants all the accolades: the cinematography is seismic, from the opening shots of nature being ruptured by landmines and bombs, to the vast, greyed-out horrors of battle scenes on the frontline. The composer Volker Bertelmann’s win for best score was equally well deserved; each time those, the motif heralded a new scene of fresh hell.
