13 wild Brazilian sharpnose sharks in coastal waters off the coast of Rio de Janeiro all tested positive for the drug
Researchers examined sharpnose sharks they sourced from small fishing boats that work in coastal waters off the coast of Rio de Janeiro
They said they found concentrations of cocaine as much as 100 times higher than previous studies had found in other aquatic creatures.Why was cocaine found in the sharks? Previous research has found animals that have ingested cocaine experience changed behaviour such as becoming more aggressive and unpredictable.
In July last year researchers found sharks may be consuming cocaine dumped by traffickers in the waters off Florida and it could be making them act in “crazy” ways,documentary and found some sharks appeared to be acting strangely and others responded to similar stimulants.
