'At 27, I'm still not sure if I'm putting them in properly'
. Finding blood in my underwear that evening was scary, despite my mom having told me what I should expect. But after pacing my bedroom, I plucked up the courage to tell her and was swiftly guided to the bathroom to get a sanitary towel., to ensure I could wear a swimming costume on the beach, and swimming lessons were missed if I was menstruating. Not once were tampons mentioned or offered as a way to get round this, and 16 years later, not much has changed.
The reason I’ve lived such a tampon-less life could come down to ethnicity. For my first-generation immigrant mother, they were never something she was encouraged to use by her Indian parents. While my grandmother had probably never seen a tampon on her arrival to England, my mother still never chose to explore them for herself, considering them dangerous and unpleasant.
'In 2019, a US study by Tampax Radiant found that 25% of African-American women preferred pads because they were never taught how to use tampons, while 55% wanted more information on how to use tampons properly,' she adds.
