Joe Biden is on the verge of making the most important decision of his long political life.
Historically—with very few exceptions—the selection of a running mate has actually had little impact on the outcome of a presidential race. The announcement makes news for a week or so, then voters go back to focusing on the main event. And then, once in office, the vice president is typically relegated to largely ceremonial duties. Or as John McCain, it’s not unlike being a prisoner of war: You get left in the dark and are occasionally fed some scraps.
That means Biden’s designated veep will get that much more attention and scrutiny. It’s going to be big news. And it’s going to be even bigger news because of COVID, which has knocked out most campaign activity and on-site reporting. The pick will be like throwing a big hunk of steak to journalists who for months have been consigned to nonevents and hungry for any substantive campaign-related headlines.
