With Washington unlikely to play much of a role in containment going forward, efforts to control spreading will be in our own hands

Walking past someone in the park who has the coronavirus won’t likely get you sick, nor will swimming in the ocean next to someone who has the coronavirus, at least not unless you plan to offer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Instead of addressing such specifics, however, our squabbles tend to revolve around poles of macho versus sissy or my rights versus your safety.

If we want to get through the next long stretch, however, only creativity will help us. People will not keep up social distancing forever. It’s too unnatural. But neither will they go back to habits as they were before. It’s too dangerous. What they will do, instead, is look for work-arounds and cleverness. For instance, car traffic is now low. Outdoor settings are safe. Summer is upon us.
