After six years, hundreds of drafts and some $100 million, the ‘Halo’ series scales Paramount Mountain at just the right time HaloTheSeries
While many companies like Paramount that pivoted to streaming have opted to dig into their IP vaults for revival attempts or redirect existing series from broadcast and cable networks to their services, the rise of gaming has shown the spotlight on IP sporting captive audiences and story-rich worlds, leading to an explosion of upcoming TV adaptations beyond just anime series.
There are many anime and animated series tied to video game IP that are still to come, but “Halo” is kicking off a wave of live-action, big-budget attempts to translate games to small screens instead of cinemas, with Netflix’s “Resident Evil” series and HBO’s “The Last of Us” up next. Such unproven adaptations could be risky bets for these companies, but the success of Netflix’s 2019 series “The Witcher” clearly proved too irresistible to ignore.
As the next hopeful candidate to generate interest in Paramount+, “Halo” is being marketed to no end as a result. Anecdotally, an ongoing visit home to the parental land of existing cable subscriptions has exposed this writer to constant moments of the “Halo” theme reverberating through the walls as sung by a chorus of classic and popular Paramount IP in an ad for the streamer.
