Lars Ulrich, drummer and co-founder of Metallica, explains why the band allowed their song 'Master of Puppets' to be used in StrangerThings season 4: 'We started saying yes to everything. Let’s share our music with the world.'

Metallica has opened up on why they let Stranger Things used their song "Master of Puppets." Stranger Things first premiered in 2016, and has quickly become one of Netflix's flagship shows, regularly topping the charts as the most-watched English language television program. Season 4, which premiered on May 27 and ended on July 1, introduced one of the most beloved fan-favorite characters to the series, Eddie Munson .

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Howard Stern , Metallica's dummer and co-founder Lars Ulrich opened up about why the band allowed "Master of Puppets" to be used in Stranger Things. Ulrich says that Metallica has always been very stingy with who they licensed their songs out to, but in recent years, they've made a complete change.

"It used to be, with Metallica, we were always the ‘no’ guys. We did a 180. We just said, ‘You know what? This is stupid. Why are we hanging onto these [songs] like they’re so important, like they’re the crown jewels?’ We started saying yes to everything. Let’s share our music with the world. It was such a mindf—k to see how that became a phenomenon. It was totally unexpected.

Despite Metallica being happy enough to let shows like Stranger Things use their songs, not all Metallica fans agree with this move. Some listeners think that the sudden surge in popularity for "Master of Puppts" feels like Metallica selling out, and that the hard rock song has gone too mainstream because of it. However, Metallica has defended their choice, calling out longtime fans for gatekeeping music.

Given Stranger Things' massive popularity, and the love surrounding Eddie in particular, Metallica's willingness to loan out their song has done nothing but good things for the band. New generations are discovering classic rock because of shows like Stranger Things, and the "Master of Puppets" scene in particular has likely gone down in television history.
