Toreros reach uncharted territory with advance to national quarterfinals, clicking in all phases of the game to defeat No. 15 Kentucky; next up: Stanford
The University of San Diego’s volleyball team has lived by a mantra this season: “Why Not Us?”The University of San Diego’s volleyball team has lived by a mantra this season: “Why Not Us?”It remains to be seen if the Toreros can win the school’s first team national championship in any sport, but Thursday night in Palo Alto, inside Stanford’s Maples Pavilion, USD accomplished something it had never pulled off.
The win was the Toreros’ 27th straight, the longest current streak in the nation, and improved USD to 30-1. Kentucky, the 2020 national champion finishes 22-8.“That was a three-knockdown rule and a tremendous performance by the Toreros,” said ESPU announcer Paul Sunderland during the broadcast. “Our whole goal coming into this was we needed to be brave, stay brave in the moment,” said Petrie. “Stay brave means taking risks. You don’t want to look back and say, ‘I could have taken a bigger swing.’”
The third set was a welcome performance after USD lost third sets last week against Northern Colorado and Washington State.
