Olympic powerhouse. The country has finished near the top of the medal table at every summer Olympics since 1984, when it opted not to participate in protest at the games being held in Los Angeles. Even at the Tokyo games in 2021, when the Russian team was officially banned, athletes competing under the banner of themanaged to win 71 medals and finish fifth. But this success will not be repeated in Paris. Only a small number of Russians were invited; many of them have refused to compete.
In the run-up to the Olympics of 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, a whistleblower revealed that Russia had carried out a state-sponsored doping programme during the Sochi Winter Olympics two years earlier, helping it to win more medals than any other country. In 2019 the World Anti-Doping Agencyfor four years for these offences and for attempting to interfere with its investigation. An appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport saw the ban overturned.
