Southwest Airlines flight attendants with Transport Workers Union Local 556 say delays and cancellations are making work more difficult.

“The job has really degraded over the years and we need to see changes to fatiguing shifts, like 24-hour calls, we need to be able to get home and we’re supposed to get home,” said TWU Local 556 President Lyn Montgomery. “And if we don’t get home, we’re supposed to get home and even be compensated for the overtime that we’re putting in.”, the nation’s largest union for aircraft crew members, including flight attendants at Chicago-based United.

The complaints by Southwest Airlines flight attendants echo issues among workers across the airline industry who say that problems with their lives have become unpredictable because have struggled with scheduling too many flights coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic downturn. Across the industry, the rates of cancellations and delays have soared and customer complaints have hit all-time highs. That’s left flight attendants and gate agents to referee frustrated passengers.

But crew members, such as flight attendants and pilots, say their scheduled trips have been extended and upended by operations troubles. On top of that, those workers say subpar technology systems often leave them without hotels and transportation during periods of heightened airline delays and cancellations.

“They ramped up the operation, but we weren’t prepared for people to travel again and they traveled in droves,” said Kay Hogan, a 35-year flight attendant and union board member with Southwest. Several of Southwest’s other major unions, including those for pilots and customer service workers, are also at an impasse with the company over contract negotiations. All groups are demanding major pay increases amid high inflation, but a key issue is mandatory overtime and scheduling improvements.
