You could probably hear the collective groan from space as Sony announced yesterday that Spider-Man would be an exclusive PlayStation character in the upcoming Crystal Dynamics Avengers game, part of a marketing deal struck with Square Enix.
The problem with exclusives is that they not only hurt the obvious suspects, the platforms that are not getting X or Y exclusive, which in this case is Xbox and PC players, but they even hurt the platform that’s supposed to benefit from them.
In Destiny’s case, that played out in a few ways. A PlayStation exclusive strike could never be chosen as the ultra-hard weekly Nightfall rotator. A PlayStation exclusive Crucible map could never be chosen as the dedicated Trials map. All PlayStation exclusive weapons could never be sold by Xur, the exotic vendor. All of these things affected PlayStation players too, and made the game just a little bit worse for everyone.
In short, his exclusivity to PlayStation limits what he can do there, and he is likely to be less prominently featured than he would be if he was a character that Xbox and PC were also getting.There were a few ways this could have gone. I think the best option for Sony’s marketing team would have been to “give away” Insomniac’s version of Spider-Man and Miles Morales to promote their own exclusive series across all platforms.
