Unlike other tanking teams, the Giants have a legit process in place — and fans should trust it, writes Dave Tobener.
The Giants suddenly found themselves contenders last year, way ahead of schedule. But they’re an organization built to contend over the long term, which means they’re not going to sacrifice their flexibility for the sake of chasing a few more wins this year. It’s a trap the Giants fell into after their dynasty years, and one they’d be smart to avoid.
Yes, it’s likely that the Giants front office sees last season as a bit of a fluke, but that doesn’t mean they’re throwing in the towel for 2022. They still have a shutdown bullpen, the starting rotation is deep and talented and their lineup is built to beat teams a number of different ways. The front office has shown a willingness to add to the roster if they’re in a position to make the postseason.
So if the lack of moves or urgency this offseason has you down, try to remember: The Giants are still in the mix. They still have a strong team. They’re not tearing things down to the studs and praying their prospects come through. They’ve managed to build a team capable of winning now, while waiting for the guys who’ll help them win more in the future.Dave Tobener is a lifelong Giants fan whose family has had season tickets for over 30 years.
