Despite its seemingly innocuous subject matter, the Tetris movie is rated R. However, there is actually a very good reason for this harsh rating.
Despite being based on one of the most inoffensive and family-friendly games of all time, the Tetris movie is rated R. Starring Taron Egerton, Nikita Efremov, and Toby Jones, the 2023 Apple TV Plus movie focuses on the background behind one of the most successful video games ever made. As a result of this historical angle, Tetris is about much more than brightly colored blocks slotting neatly on top of one another – going some way towards explaining its slightly surprising rating.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Tetris tells the true story of the behind-the-scenes legal battle over the intellectual property rights to the titular Tetris game. Set during the peak of hostile relations between the US and Soviet Union, Taron Egerton plays real-life Tetris figure Henk Rogers, who was instrumental in bringing the game to the world's attention.
Tetris Movie Is Rated R Because of Swearing Although the Tetris game has proved popular with players of all ages, the Tetris movie is rated R because of an abundance of bad language. According to Plugged In, the f-word alone is used nearly 30 times. This explained why Tetris is rated R, in spite of its more family-friendly branding.
The MPA's decision regarding Tetris rating is reflected in rating agencies around the world. In the United Kingdom, for example, the movie has been given a 15 certificate – equivalent to an R. Likewise, Canadian regulators have marked the movie as an 18A, although this age limit is self-applied. Nevertheless, it's clear from multiple bodies that Tetris' language is extreme enough to make it decidedly unsuitable for children.
Often, especially in projects that are designed to have broad, mass-market appeal, compromises are made to appease censors and avoid harsh ratings. While this can secure a wider release, it often lessens the impact of a movie, altering the intention of the filmmakers. Given that Tetris retains an R-rating for a fairly innocuous reason, it's clear that few – if any – such compromises were made.
