Longtime James Bond franchise casting director Debbie McWilliams explains why younger actors were ultimately rejected for Casino Royale. Released in 2006, Casino Royale introduces Daniel Craig as the sixth actor to play Bond, following Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan. While Craig won the part, several other actors have been revealed to have been in the running, including Henry Cavill, Sam Worthington, and Clive Owen.

What it came down to, she explains, is that the candidates in their 20s lacked a certain charisma and maturity that only the slightly older candidates exuded.
"When we started, it was a slightly different feel. We did look at a lot of younger actors, and I just don't think they had the gravitas, they didn't have the experience, they didn't have the mental capacity to take it on, because it's not just the part they're taking on, it's a massive responsibility. So we kind of scrubbed that idea and went back to the drawing board and started again.
Should James Bond 26 Feature A Younger 007? Save for Lazenby, who was only 29 in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, every past James Bond film has featured an actor in their 30s or older. After No Time To Die featured a franchise first of killing Bond, producer Barbara Broccoli has promised that James Bond 26 will feature a "total reinvention" of the character. What this means, however, remains something of a mystery.
For a time, it was believed that James Bond 26 would feature a younger version of 007, but franchise producer Michael G. Wilson eventually debunked this theory. As he explains, Bond is generally believed to have spent some time in the SAS, which is a harder sell if the actor is in their 20s. Plus, part of 007's general appeal is that he's an experienced spy who knows what he's doing. While Craig's Bond in Casino Royale is earlier in his career, he still knows what he's doing.
