Eight months after closing temporarily to find a new location, a family-owned cafe and bakery is preparing to open its new Jacksonville shop.

"There was no way I would have made it if the community hadn't done what they did. They got us just over the hump enough that we were able to catch our breath and hold on," she said.

She previously spent 31 years in food service. But she'd never worked in a bakery until launching Wicked Batter Cafe with her family four years ago in Orange Park. "We just wanted to get back into food and we literally had to pick a concept and create it from the ground up. For us, we wanted to do something that was easily franchisable and something that filled a need," she said.

"There is a lot of art in baking and it's being lost because people aren't practicing it anymore. As people were losing connection with that part of our culinary history, we decided this was the way to go," Tharp said.Customer and community support saved Wicked Batter from permanently closing because of the pandemic and aftermath of supply chain disruptions, rising costs of ingredients and staffing shortages.
