The San Francisco Bay Area woke up to eerie orange and yellow skies and a layer of ash Wednesday morning as wildfires burn across California during the state’s record-breaking fire season.Dozens of fires are blazing across California, Oregon and Washington have caused an unprecedented amount of smoke to be released into the atmosphere, and wind blew it down into the San Francisco Bay Area and higher into the atmosphere.

The results were unsettling, with dark orange skies and a layer of ash making the morning look like dusk. The apocalyptic images weren’t met with dire air quality or the smell of smoke in the morning though, because strong winds are pushing smoke above the marine layer, which acts as a barrier—but the air quality could worsen as the winds weaken, the National Weather ServiceCalifornia has seen 7,606 fires and 2.3 million acres burned this year compared to 4,927 fires and 118,000 acres burned last year, Governor Gavin Newsom said at a press conference Wednesday.
