The Will County executive will negotiate with union employees to recognize Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of slaves, as one of its paid, observed holidays.

“Will County should recognize the significance of Juneteenth as part of our nation’s history, as this day celebrates the importance of freedom and emancipation for all people,” she said.Minority Leader Mike Fricilone from Homer Glen said the collective bargaining process should happen behind closed doors.

“I really do believe that as 26 county board members we are stewards of the costs and finances for this board, and that ought to be concern to all of us,” said Brooks, who was the first Black speaker of the board. “However, understanding what Juneteenth means to a lot of people as a holiday, I think what ought to be evenly important is not just the cost but the cause.”

Republican Don Gould of Shorewood said his district has several industries, such as natural gas power plants, that pay millions in taxes to Will County and other governmental bodies. “This is the wave of the future,” Ventura said. “Will County continues to be at the forefront of it and I hope we stay there.”

Board member Steve Balich, a Republican from Homer Glen, said there are so many problems that it wouldn’t be right to single out homelessness.
