Will County is on pace to surpass last year’s number of overdose deaths and county Coroner Laurie Summers wants drug users and their families to know there are street drugs out there that contain lethal doses of fentanyl.

Summers said she is not condoning drug use. However, she wants residents to understand street drugs can contain deadly fentanyl and hopes those who struggle with addiction get the help they need before they reach her office.Deaths involving illicitly manufactured fentanyl are on the rise, according to the Center for Disease Control.
In 2021 there were 150 overdose deaths, with 111 contributed to heroin/fentanyl overdoses, statistics on the coroner’s website show. Narcan, a brand of naloxone, is a medicine used to reverse opioid overdose and can restore a person’s breathing if it has slowed or stopped.
