The legislation would ban medical professionals from “the performance of hymen examinations on women as a means to ascertain whether a woman is a virgin,” which practitioners typically do by inserting fingers or a speculum into a woman’s vagina to see if the hymen is torn. Under the proposal, practitioners who performed the test could be penalized for professional misconduct.
