Calls have been made for England to celebrate a Lionesses' win with an extra day off work
Millions of England fans will be hoping for victory as the Lionesses take on Spain in today's Women's World Cup final.
Calls have been made for the government to announce an extra bank holiday if the Lionesses take home the trophy at today's final in Sydney, which kicks off at 11am BST. But fans are likely to be disappointed as the government has so far poured cold water on the idea.No 10 has said an extra bank holiday is not currently in its plans, but said it will find the “right way to celebrate” if England win. Critics have hit out at the 'mean-spirited' government for dismissing the idea.
The remarks followed an earlier statement to the BBC which also said: “The current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and there are no plans to change this.” Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey echoed the call, saying: “The Lionesses have made history by reaching the final, they are an inspiration to athletes across the country already. Winning the World Cup would be a phenomenal achievement. It absolutely deserves to celebrated with a bank holiday.”
