Actor William Shatner will be inducted into San Diego Air & Space Museum hall of fame
Actor William Shatner will be inducted into the San Diego Air & Space Museum’s International Hall of Fame this fall for stoking the public’s interest in the cosmos by portraying Capt. James T. Kirk in the original “Star Trek” TV series and in many of the movies that followed.
“To see the blue color whip by you, and now you’re staring into blackness … everybody in the world needs to do this,” Shatner said moments after the spacecraft landed in west Texas.Shatner is the best known of three prominent figures who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in October. The others are famed Korean War Navy fighter pilot Royce Williams of Escondido and long-distance aviator Robert DeLaurentis, a part-time San Diego resident.
On Nov. 18, 1952, Williams flew off the deck of the carrier USS Oriskany near North Korea and quickly became embroiled in a solo dogfight with seven Soviet MiGs. He managed to shoot down four of the enemy planes during 35 minutes of battle, then guide his bullet-riddled plane back to the carrier. Historians describe the feat as one of the most masterful pieces of flying on record.
