Wilmer-Hutchins' first female football player in program history has helped her team achieve its best start since 2020.
Barnett coached girls soccer for one season in 2017 but had never coached a girl in football before. In fact, Aguilar — who tried out for the team on the first day of school and made it — became the first girl on varsity football in Wilmer-Hutchins history. Withstarting its season at 4-0, she has never lost a football game in her playing career.
“She popped that thing up in the air, and it was the best onside kick,” Barnett said. “It was one bounce, my guy caught it and the whole sideline erupted.”The response Aguilar got on that play is one she’s commanded from her teammates throughout the season. While she and her coach said there have been some people in the Wilmer-Hutchins community that have questioned the decision to use a girl as the starting kicker, her teammates have been nothing but supportive.
“When she touches that field, everybody on that sideline is locked in,” he said. “They’re watching her. Coaches have to do special things to focus and refocus. We don’t have to do that because we have Jacqueline Aguilar.Aguilar and Wilmer-Hutchins will face their toughest test yet Friday in
