Keep in mind this outlook is an overall three-month trend. Therefore, we will likely see periods that are warmer or colder in each respective region of the country when compared to what is shown above. Much of the nation's midsection, including the Mississippi Valley, northern Gulf Coast, Florida and the West Coast, should be near or slightly warmer than average in December.The best chance of a colder-than-average January will be in northern Minnesota. However, January should at least be somewhat colder than usual from parts of Washington state and northern Idaho to the northern Plains, much of the Midwest and interior Northeast into northern New England.
The cooling of these waters can have an atmospheric domino effect that influences weather patterns across the globe. There are other puzzle pieces besides La Niña to consider in the forecast, which leads us to the next question. "We have no strong reason to favor a super-weak vortex like we had in winter 2020-21 at this time, and feel this winter be more like last winter," Crawford said.
