The Al-Tawheed Islamic Center in Jersey City opened a new $5 million center opened last year. With COVID easing, they are once again looking forward to communal break-fasts during Ramadan.
Al Tawheed Islamic Center in Jersey CityIslam has one of the strictest periods of fasting and abstinence of any major religion: Ramadan, a 30-day period when healthy Muslims fast from drinking, eating and anger from dawn until dusk.
“We can eat all together,” said Kamel Haddouche, the center’s executive manager, who is proud of every nook and cranny of the 5,000-square-foot space. The first floor’s mosque is the smaller of the two and is used for five-times-daily prayers. Surrounding it are some offices, meeting rooms and a ghusl, or washing room, where they prepare bodies for Muslim funerals held in the mosque.
Haddouche, 62, emigrated to the U.S. from Algeria in 1995 and served as a board member before his appointment to run the center. There are strong rules to follow during Ramadan – recite the Quran, offer prayers, observe the fast, do charity, practice self-discipline, remain celibate, show respect, dress appropriately, get along with your friends, and encourage unity. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating any food, drinking any liquids, smoking cigarettes, and engaging in any sexual activity from dawn to sunset. That includes taking medication even if you swallow a pill dry, without drinking any water.
