With Gregg Popovich sidelined, Brett Brown takes over Spurs’ process

One minute and 43 seconds into Friday’s game, New Orleans forward Trey Murphy III sashayed through the heart of the Spurs’ defense for the type of easy-does-it dunk typically reserved for pregame warmups.There was a whistle, and an angry coach signaling for a timeout.
Popovich, 73, is expected to return to the bench for the Spurs’ next game after that, Thursday at home against Houston. He was rehired in San Antonio this summer, in part because of his expertise in dealing with the rigors of a developmental season in which the defeats are apt to far outweigh the triumphs.
The Spurs entered the season aware the odds of them challenging for a playoff spot were close to nil. “There is always a slippery slope where you have to demand,” Brown said. “So when do you give them love and when do you bite them? There’s no book that tells you how to do that. You just figure out the pulse of the gym.”Besides the quick timeout to start the game, he called early ones at the beginning of the second and fourth quarters as well.“Just because Pop wasn’t there, just because we’re a young group or whatever the case may be, he’s not going to let us slack,” Vassell said.
He hopes the same sort of building blocks are being laid in San Antonio, even as the Spurs tumble to the bottom rung of the conference standings.
