Biologists and conservation officers were still searching for the cougar as of Sunday afternoon, using trained hounds.
The two women were on the Pipeline Trail around 8:30 a.m. when they rounded a corner and encountered a cougar.
The other runner hit the cougar with a rock, and the two women were able to get away and hike down the trail together. If the cougar is found, it will be euthanized per policy because it attacked a person, Jolley said. The animal also will be tested for rabies. Jolley added that they hope the cougar’s scent is still in the air, so the hounds can find the correct cougar.
Jolley said it’s “pretty rare” for cougars to attack people. Biologists believe the animal was startled when the two women came around the corner.
