The collision happened at a Lafayette roundabout at Pleasant Hill Road and Olympic Boulevard.
A motorist who hit and killed a Lafayette bicycling legend at a roundabout last year has been sentenced to probation and community service by a Contra Costa judge, officials said.
Lori Everett will be on probation for one year and must serve 100 hours of community service, according to Contra Costa District Attorney spokesman Ted Asregadoo. She also must complete a Department of Motor Vehicles safe-driver course and pay various fines and fees, he said. Everett was driving an SUV when she struck 86-year-old Joe Shami on April 13, 2021, at the Lafayette roundabout intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and Olympic Boulevard. Superior Court Judge Joni T. Hiramoto handed out the sentence after Everett pleaded no contest to a charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
Shami, an accomplished cyclist and lifelong bicycling advocate, was beloved in that community and known as “The Legend of Mount Diablo” for having ridden up the mountain at least once a week for 500 straight weeks.
