Superman and Batman’s roles and characterization within the DCEU created a major problem for Wonder Woman. That can’t happen again in the DCU.
The DCEU made a big mistake in their characterizations of Batman and Superman, and Wonder Woman paid the price. They could’ve ha a good thing going, but the constant creative turmoil, happening behind the camera got the DCEU stuck in the muck. The heroes are iconic for a reason, but overall, they never made the impact they deserved. There is hope on the horizon, though.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Gunn’s DC Universe has a litany of mistakes from the DCEU it needs to fix. The franchise’s tactics in distinguishing it from their greatest competitor, the MCU, in aesthetic, tone, and character arcs were commendable. A lot did work, but, unfortunately, even more didn’t. The gritty take on the world and the characters didn’t always land and important stories were rushed and felt disjointed.
Significantly, in the comics, it is Wonder Woman who is typically the most ruthless of the three. She comes from a culture of war and initially doesn’t understand the world around her after leaving Themyscira. Yet, the DCEU made her more docile compared to Superman and Batman. She’s certainly her classically noble, heroic, and inspiring self, and even becomes a more of a symbol of hope than Superman in the DCEU. That’s definitely not a bad thing at all and she deserves to be celebrated as such.
What The New DCU Can Learn From Superman & Batman's Violence Gunn and Safran must take a different approach, and their plans are already proving they are doing so. The new DCU is drawing inspiration from Grant Morrison’s work for both Superman and Batman, revealing how the characters will operate differently. In Superman: Legacy, written by Gunn himself, they will showcase a classic Superman and his heroic ideals.
The DC Universe can learn from previous mistakes and make sure that violence is used more keenly - not for action or spectacles’ sake, but to further the respective character’s portrayals and stories. This all paints a brighter picture for Wonder Woman too, even if her introduction is further down the line. Importantly, among the initial projects is Paradise Lost, an HBO Max series set on Themyscira before her birth.
