As a place to work, Coffee Connection is a great find — not only because of its idyllic courtyard or reasonably priced espresso but because there is a real sense of. Within minutes of sitting down, I witnessed a real-life meet-cute and later overheard neighbors recognize they were sitting a few tables from each other. Also, did I mention there is free parking ? They made their teams feel seen, heard, appreciated, and supported, and as a consequence, their teams delivered better results. While these conversations are tough to have and often take a great deal of courage to conduct, but for any new or aspiring leader, they are essential to initiate during your one-on-ones. Every manager should keep an eye on what they need from people to stay on track with their larger team goals, but they should also stop and ask what their teams need to deliver on those goals. They should also learn about their team’s fears and insecurities and be courageous enough to talk about their own. Most people want to win, to learn, to feel of service, etc. But taken to an extreme, each of these core motivators can be derailing. This will increase productivity that only comes when people are using their greatest talents. Managers who connect the work of employees to the broader purpose and mission of the company are more likely to retain and motivate employees. By getting curious and having these

How to Debate Ideas Productively at WorkHow to Debate Ideas Productively at WorkResearch tells us that cognitive diversity makes a group smarter. Two heads are, indeed, better than one, and many heads are even better, especially when everyone is willing to share their expertise and opinions. While diverse thinking and disagreements can be uncomfortable, they are more likely to lead partners or a team to make progress, innovate and come up with breakthrough solutions than consensus and “nice” conversations in which people hold back what they think. But how do you have a productive debate? By reminding your group to follow four general rules: Remember we’re all on the same team. Keep it about facts, logic, and the topic at hand. Don’t make it personal. Be intellectually humble.
