The attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil industry have prompted the U.S. and Saudi to build up air defenses in the kingdom

The U.S. military is deploying an additional 2,000 troops, two squadrons of jet fighters, three new antimissile systems and other equipment to Saudi Arabia in an effort to better prepare the kingdom to counter Iran.

A U.S. State Department official said it doesn’t comment on private diplomatic conversations. “The United States continues to build upon the important, strategic partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia,” the official said. The kingdom’s air-defense system never had a chance to activate because neither the Saudi nor U.S. systems detected the launch of the airstrike, U.S. officials have said. Saudi Arabia’s Patriot missiles are mainly positioned to counter attacks from Yemen, where Houthi rebels have already launched attacks on airports, oil installations and a desalination plant in the kingdom, U.S. officials said.

U.S. officials are also concerned that the Saudis are overusing their Patriots as they defer maintenance and training in an attempt to keep all 24 up and online every day, officials said. They are also working with the Saudi government to prioritize their Patriot air-defense systems to counter threats from other directions such as Iran, the official said.

“The phone is ringing off the hook with calls from top governments to reimagine how to develop legislation, policy, and strategy to defend their critical infrastructure against new-world security threats like this,” said Sam Blatteis, chief executive of Dubai-based The MENA Catalysts, which advises on emerging security challenges.
