Godzilla may be the King of the Monsters, but he doesn't always get to be the hero. Here's nine Godzilla movies where another monster took that role.
Sometimes, it’s another monster who winds up in the spotlight in a Godzilla movie. With a cinematic history that’s lasted more than 60 years, the Japanese pop culture icon has been the driving force of over 30 movies. But even though he was the main draw in nearly every installment, there were a few films where the studio allowed another monster a chance to play the hero.
9 King Kong vs. Godzilla Godzilla had his first showdown with King Kong in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla, a crossover film the studio had worked out with RKO, the then-owners of the King Kong character. The movie, which arrived at a time when Godzilla’s pop culture status was still building, allowed King Kong to take center stage.
7 Godzilla vs. Megalon After Mothra vs. Godzilla, Toho pivoted with Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, which started the famous trend of Godzilla being a defender of Japan, rather than its would-be destroyer. It lasted up until the very end of the Showa era, with Godzilla saving the day in each film. Released in 1971, Godzilla vs. Megalon was in keeping with that strategy, albeit with one significant change.
5 Godzilla vs. Mothra Godzilla vs. Mothra furthered the Heisei era’s reinvention of Godzilla by offering a long-awaited rematch between Godzilla and Mothra. Helping to differentiate it from its predecessor was the introduction of Battra, a kaiju characterized as Mothra’s evil counterpart. Surprisingly, though, Battra didn’t turn out to be the villain of the story. Rather, that role went to Godzilla, as even Battra had decided that Godzilla was too dangerous to leave unchecked.
