Elon Musk’s declaration on Friday that he would remove the block feature on X, the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter, could jeopardize its spot on Apple Inc.’s App Store and Alphabet Inc.’s Google Play.
The Tesla Inc. TSLA, -2.09% chief executive and owner of X said the microblogging service will soon remove user’s ability to block people — with the exception of direct messages. In a post on Twitter, Musk said that the block feature “makes no sense” and recommended people use the mute button instead.
Musk’s comment came in response to a question about whether there’s “ever a reason to block” someone rather than muting them. But he provided neither details nor a timeline for making the change. Guidelines on Apple’s AAPL, +0.26% App Store and Google’s GOOGL, -2.22% GOOG, -2.07% Play Store require social-media apps like Twitter and Meta Platforms Inc.’s META, -0.81% Facebook to have a block feature to give users the ability to block abusive people.
Should X violate that rule, it could be booted off the two popular app stores. That’s assuming, of course, that the controversial Musk follows through on his most recent bluster.
