US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, wrapping up a rare and pivotal trip to Beijing
Blinken welcomes 'candid and constructive' conversationsBEIJING, June 19 - China and the United States agreed on Monday to stabilize their intense rivalry so it doesn't veer into conflict but failed to produce any major breakthrough during a rare visit to Beijing by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
"But progress is hard. It takes time. And it’s not the product of one visit, one trip, one conversation. My hope and expectation is: we will have better communications, better engagement going forward." "The two sides have also made progress and reached the agreement on some specific issues. This is very good," Xi told Blinken across a long table bedecked with pink lotus flowers.
Blinken raised contentious issues such as Taiwan, human rights, North Korea's provocations and U.S. concerns with Beijing's intelligence activities in Cuba, the State Department said. The lack of open communication channels between the two countries has sent jitters around the world, and Beijing's reluctance to engage in regular military-to-military talks with Washington has alarmed China's neighbors.

Blinken opens second day of talks in Beijing on mission to ease soaring US-China tensionsU.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has opened a second and final day of critical meetings with senior Chinese officials as the two sides expressed willingness to talk but showed little inclination to bend on hardened positions that have sent tensions soaring. Blinken met for three hours with China's top diplomat Wang Yi Monday morning, and an encounter with President Xi Jinping was still in the cards before Blinken departs in the late evening. In the first round of talks on Sunday, Blinken met for nearly six hours with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang after which both countries said they had agreed to continue high-level discussions. However, there was no sign that any of the most fractious issues between them were closer to resolution.

Blinken arrives Beijing on high-stakes mission to cool soaring US-China tensionsU.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Beijing on a high-stakes diplomatic mission trip to try to cool exploding U.S.-China tensions that have set many around the world on edge. Yet prospects for any significant breakthrough on the most vexing issues facing the planet's two largest economies are slim. The trip comes after he postponed plans to visit in February after the shootdown of a Chinese surveillance balloon over the U.S. He is the highest-level American official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office and the first secretary of state to make the trip in five years.
