Chinese president Xi Jinping told the UN General Assembly that his country will be carbon-neutral by 2060. Beijing is notorious for making promises it doesn’t keep, but these are more credible. There is also self-interest involved, says petesweeneypro

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Sept. 22 that his country’s carbon dioxide emissions would peak before 2030 and reach carbon neutrality before 2060.

Xi’s comments, which included a call for a worldwide “green revolution”, were made in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly just minutes after U.S. President Donald Trump criticised China for “rampant pollution”. The neutrality target represents the first pledge by the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide to end its net contribution to climate change.
