The reason behind some fans’ distaste of the game, and the Harry Potter franchise in general, is the views of author JK Rowling regarding transgender people.
Publisher Warner Bros. has stressed that Rowling is not involved with Hogwarts Legacy, although obviously she will still profit from its success.One of the streamers at the heart of the controversy is political commentator HasanAbi, who revealed he’s refraining from playing the game mainly because he doesn’t want to deal with any harassment.
He added that he was called transphobic on his alternate account for ‘even thinking about’ playing Hogwarts Legacy. ‘We know that it’s not worth it to get f***ing bullied endlessly and called transphobic endlessly when we have massive queer communities and audiences,’ he said. HasanAbi’s comments came after he saw a clip in which trolls brought Shelby, from streamer duo Girlfriend Reviews, to tears for playing Hogwarts Legacy.
