Carlos Rodón gave up a season-high eight hits and seven earned runs in Thursday's loss to the Tigers, raising his ERA to 6.60.
Detroit produced an average exit velocity of 95.5 mph against Rodón, putting 15 balls in play against the lefty. Even the outs that Rodón recorded in his 3 2/3 innings of work were hammered. Jasson Domínguez had his back up against the center field wall on back-to-back flyballs in the third, balls that stayed in the yard but would’ve been gone in other parks.
This fan base rejoiced when Rodón was signed to a six-year deal in free agency this past winter. Adding another ace-caliber arm to a rotation that was poised to be the best in baseball felt like it was worth the $162 million price of admission. It’s certainly possible that Rodón recaptures his old form in 2024. A productive offseason and injury-free spring feels like the best recipe for his success. Besides, Rodón had started to show signs of improvement before Thursday’s clunker, posting a 2.87 ERA in his previous three starts. The talent is in there. He’s just a million miles away from the bulldog that helped carry the Giants last season, the starter that earned such a big payday on the open market.
-- Rookie Everson Pereira lined a two-run double to the wall in left field in the fourth inning, the sixth and seventh runs batted in of his Yankees career.
