Instead of starting McCullers on Saturday Oct. 22, Houston will go with a bullpen day led by Cristian Javier, who was excellent for the Astros this season but moved to the bullpen for the postseason. Javier went 11-9 with a 2.54 ERA in 30 games with 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings. Javier didn’t say how many pitches he believed he’d be able to throw Saturday. He tossed 21 in Game 1 of the ALDS on Oct. 11.McCullers said he threw a 35-pitch bullpen Friday in preparation for Sunday.
“Like I said, it wasn’t like we were getting wild,” McCullers said. “I mean, I was standing there, he was walking by, it just happened to hit me in the right spot. Obviously, I’ve had Tommy John [surgery] and stuff. Everything’s fine.” He added, “And we just decided as an organization, a medical staff, and everything earlier in the week that it was better just to take our time with it, not to push anything, and to shoot for Game 4, and everything’s worked out well. We’re playing great baseball. Cristian is going to pitch great, and I’ll be ready for 4.”“To me ... this is just going to be another game,” he said.
