He's been flying under the radar, pitching with an xBA hovering around .230 in his last four starts. What's more, he's managed to bump up his ground ball rate to 50% or higher in his last two outings. And here's the kicker: In two of his last three games, he didn't let a single home run or walk slip by.
One of Schmidt's standout performances in recent weeks was against the Red Sox. He went out and struck out eight batters over 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two runs. To top it all off, his ERA against the Red Sox this season is a rock-solid 2.87 in 15 2/3 innings. Now, that's some serious improvement.
