Oswald Peraza and Oswaldo Cabrera have been the Yankees' most productive position players since Jasson Domínguez was shut down with his season-ending elbow injury.
Peraza is also putting it together, batting .292 with a long ball of his own, a towering blast over the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Game 2 of Thursday’s doubleheader. It was his first home run of the season with the big-league club.
One week is hardly enough of a sample size to change a player’s status on the depth chart going into next season, but it’s exactly what these two former prospects have been coveting all summer long. Both 23-year-olds have struggled to take advantage of sporadic opportunities, either relegated to Triple-A, stuck on the bench or unproductive in pinstripes.

The worst-case scenario for Peraza is the Yankees hold on to Torres and either sign a third baseman or keep DJ LeMahieu over there as a starter. Peraza needs consistent playing time to reach his potential and if the Yankees don’t have plans to use him in that way, perhaps it’s time to capitalize on a late-season rebound in trade value and move him for pitching this winter.
