One of the most iconic moments in Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 epic 'The Godfather Part II' was shot at Lake Tahoe's Fleur du Lac Estates.
Al Pacino's Michael Corleone stares out from the sunroom of his Nevada enclave at dusk, over Lake Tahoe. He watches through the glass, as his orders to kill his brother Fredo are executed. It's arguably one of the most tragic movie moments, ever. The score swells as leaves rustle in the wind; the sun drops behind the Sierra Nevada, as a shot rings out, and Michael drops his head.
In 1935, before Coppola was even born, the co-founder of Kaiser Permanente and builder of the Hoover Dam, Henry J. Kaiser, constructed the luxurious estate on Tahoe’s west shore. According to, Kaiser wanted a place to celebrate the completion of America's most famous dam on his favorite lake. A crew of 300 men worked around the clock and built the entire estate in a month. It was reportedly the site of decadent parties, where feasts were followed by speedboat races across the lake.
