The image-conscious president has requested high-quality prints of newspaper photos of himself and retweeted images taken by photojournalists.

By David Nakamura David Nakamura Reporter covering the White House Email Bio Follow April 23 at 6:00 AM President Trump plans to skip the White House White House Correspondents’ Association dinner again this weekend in favor of a campaign rally in Wisconsin, where he is expected to amplify attacks on the press corps he has disparaged as the “enemy of the people.”

Trump has been so taken with pictures of himself published in newspapers that aides have requested high-quality prints on his behalf, and the president has retweeted images from photojournalists on social media. Yet Obama aides did not permit the photographers to bring their own cameras or cellphones and required that a White House staff photographer take the meet-and-greet photos. By contrast, Trump allows the attendees to take their own pictures, said a photographer who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private events.

Trump’s tone is perhaps most striking in the way he has dealt with his hometown paper, the New York Times, which he has denounced as “failing” — even though the publication has thrived with more than 4 million total subscribers. Some photographers have expressed a measure of satisfaction in the access they have to Trump. During Obama’s tenure, the WHCA logged formal complaints over photojournalists being excluded from events that were open to official White House photographer Pete Souza, who has since published two books of his work.
