Just Stop Oil may well be portrayed as the enemy of the people, but this narrative masks the identity of our real enemy
Like all protests involving civil disobedience, they’re disruptive, they’re controversial – and perhaps even a little extreme.For the people watching the Epsom Derby in 1913, they no doubt thought of Emily Davison as a deranged woman when she ran in front of the King’s horse in the name of women’s suffrage.
Just Stop Oil’s message is simple: they want the UK Government to commit to not signing deals for new oil and gas licences, in order to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and to reduce irreversible damage to the planet. But to see things from the protesters’ point of view is to envisage a future in which millions will be displaced due to flooding, famine and fire.
