A reader expresses disappointment about the discontinuation of the Sunday poem in the Express-News, citing the work of Amanda Gorman, who captured the nation’s attention during the 2021 presidential inauguration.Just recently the City Council passed a “drink and fly” ordinance allowing patrons at San Antonio International Airport to drink openly in the terminal . Now we have to not only deal with unruly passengers on board, but given this ordinance, the whole airport becomes a bar.

What are they thinking? Now our airport, as simple as it is, becomes another place where the public has to deal with the smell of alcohol, loud people on cellphones and trash left in the terminal. Is this the only way to compete with Austin’s more direct flights? I guess the next time someone orders a drink at the airport, they take their drink and pour it into their coffee mug, and on the plane they go! Just another problem now to deal with, and at whose cost?Amanda Gorman stirred a national consciousness with her words on Inauguration Day 2021; Rupi Kaur’s poetry books are consistently on the New York Times Bestsellers list; Brandon Leake had a one-hour poetry special on CW earlier this month.

San Antonio: first in establishing a city poet laureate, home to five of the last 10 poets laureate of Texas. Yet there’s no space for poetry in its local paper. We didn’t expect such dismissiveness from a repository of words. For the most part, I believe the Express-News does a good job of balancing conservative and liberal viewpoints. I say this because some opinion pieces I agree with, and some I don’t.

However, I do not think that the comic “Mallard Fillmore” belongs with the other three pages of comics. “Mallard Fillmore” is consistently conservative and belongs on the Editorial Page. It might also create more balance by pairing “Mallard” with a somewhat more liberal or centrist strip, such as “Doonesbury.”

Feds want 25 years for Chauvin for violating Floyd's rightsFeds want 25 years for Chauvin for violating Floyd's rightsFederal prosecutors asked a judge on Wednesday to sentence a former Minneapolis officer to 25 years for violating the rights of George Floyd, saying Derek Chauvin's actions were cold-blooded and needless as he knelt on the Black man's neck while Floyd repeatedly said he couldn't breathe. Chauvin pleaded guilty in December to violating Floyd’s rights, admitting for the first time that he kept his knee on Floyd’s neck — even after he became unresponsive — resulting in Floyd's death. Chauvin, who is white, admitted he willfully deprived Floyd of his right to be free from unreasonable seizure, including unreasonable force by a police officer, during the May 2020 arrest.
