Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday proposed a prisoner swap, offering to exchange a Russian oligarch who is a close friend of Vladimir Putin for Ukrainians held captive by Russian forces.
Viktor Medvedchuk was detained after he escaped house arrest on treason charges in what Ukrainian security services called a"lightning-fast and dangerous" operation.
He also warned,"Let Medvedchuk be an example for you: Even the former oligarch did not escape. We will get everyone."Medvedchuk, one of Putin's closest allies in Ukraine, disappeared from Kyiv around the start of the war. Zelensky said he had been hiding for weeks before trying to escape. The Kremlin had a different opinion, saying it categorically disagreed with Biden and that Russia"consider[s] such attempts to distort the situation unacceptable."
"Who could approve such a plan?" he said."And what is the final level of their own losses acceptable for this person?" Pawel Szrot, chief of staff for Poland's president, said Andrzej Duda brings"symbolic support, with political support and for talks on material support." He added that all four countries are"extending support to Ukraine that is of humanitarian nature and not necessarily of humanitarian nature."
