Maria Cornejo isn’t one for themes. Her work is rooted in an aesthetic honed over decades in business; after shape and proportion, which are her guiding passions, she devotes herself to fabric development, with a deep focus on sustainable materials and processes. But there’s a first time for everything, and this season she was attracted to the butterfly, both visually and metaphorically. “It’s about rebirth,” she said, “coming back to life.
So she designed a voile embroidered with hand drawn butterflies, abstract enough at first glance as to be almost undetectable, and used it for a shift, and other softly draped shapes. A jacquard in two shades of blue with bits of red she cut into a blouson-ish cocoon and a ruff-necked jumpsuit with a drop crotch so deep it looks more like a dress on the model.
On the responsible design front, Cornejo is establishing what she called vertical production in Japan and Turkey. Asked for clarification she explained that her factories in both of those places are making the fabric and constructing the garments. Japan is responsible for the French terry sweat-shirting, and Turkey for the Sim Jersey made from sustainably sourced viscose and elastane.

Ground zero rebuilding still unfinished, 20 years laterTwo decades after its destruction in the Sept. 11 attacks, the work to rebuild the World Trade Center complex remains incomplete. Two planned skyscrapers, a performing arts center and a church are still unfinished at the site, which plays host Saturday to the annual ceremony honoring nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks. Visitors to the commemoration will find a place that no longer has the feel of a construction zone, though, even as the work continues.
