With most museums closed because of the pandemic, virtual salons are finding a captive audience of art aficionados.
Back in February, the art historian Page Knox was putting the finishing touches on her tour notes for “Photography’s Last Century,” a special exhibition in honor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's 150Comprising nearly 100 works from the medium’s greatest practitioners, including Edward Weston, Man Ray, Diane Arbus, Andy Warhol, and Cindy Sherman, this comprehensive overview was scheduled to run from March through June.
The result was a runaway success. Knox’s one-hour Zoom presentation – featuring slides accompanied by her scholarly, yet witty narrative – left her audience clamoring for more. Overnight, Knox pivoted from lecturing in classrooms and galleries to running an online salon featuring past masters including Caravaggio, Van Gogh, and Michelangelo, as well as contemporary icons such as David Hockney, Kerry James Marshall, and Francis Bacon.
As quarantine conditions spread around the country, friends told friends, and Knox’s client list grew exponentially. In addition to regular weekly offerings, she began appearing at special events, including an 80“My relatives wanted to do something unique for my Mom and my aunt,” says Nancy Risman, a resident of Connecticut's Fairfield County. “Since we couldn’t get 30 of their friends to a physical celebration, we invited them to a virtual gathering.
