The state of Alaska reported nearly 1,600 additional COVID-19 infections over the last two days as a dramatic spike in cases continues. Alaska’s number of people hospitalized with the virus, however, has remained mostly level over the last few weeks.

Alaska’s rate of new cases per capita is inching closer to what it was during the delta variant surge this fall, but Alaska has nowhere near the highest rate in the country, as it once did. According to, Alaska’s average rate of new cases per capita over the last seven days is 509 cases per 100,000 people. The national average rate is over 1,100 cases per 100,000.

The rise in cases driven by the omicron variant has spurred an increased demand for testing. On Tuesday the Anchorage Health Department announced it had given out the majority of the 25,000 at-home COVID-19 test kits it recently got through a program offered by the state. The city health department saidin Spenard and Fairview on Tuesday due to the severe windstorm event in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
