Houston Astros' Luis Garcia's hair flies as he throws a pitch to the Tampa Bay Rays during the fifth inning of a baseball game Tuesday, April 25, 2023, in St. Petersburg, Fla. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Pitching at Tropicana Field has been a nightmare for opposing pitchers this season. Still, on paper, it looked like a good matchup for Luis Garcia. The Rays offense hits everything well, but the one pitch it hits the least well is the cutter.
"I didn't throw as many fastballs as usual," Garcia said."I'm fine with that though, because it worked well for me." The Rays' .896 OPS entering the game is the best in baseball, but they'd only had a .605 OPS against cutters. Against Garcia's cutter, they went 2-for-11, with one of those hits coming off a broken bat.
"That's Luis' best pitch," Astros catcher Maldonado said."We didn't talk about them not hitting cutters well, but that's Luis' pitch anyway, so we went with it." Garcia now has tallied 13 consecutive scoreless innings piggybacking this start with the seven shutout innings he threw against the Blue Jays last week. Before that, Garcia gave up five runs in five innings to the Rangers, but even then,Maldonado brought that back up this time when he was asked about Garcia's two good starts.
